Tenebrae means “shadows.” During this quiet service, we remember the events leading to Jesus’ crucifixion. As Scripture is read, the lights are slowly dimmed until the room grows dark. At the end of the service, the door closes with a loud sound, reminding us of the sorrow and finality of the day Jesus died.
